"I just tripped on de cahpet."

Upon leaving the emergency room early Monday morning, and after much waiting and struggling to pin him down, I whispered in Seth’s ear, “Seth, tomorrow, I’m gonna make you a cake.” This perked him up. He lifted his head from my shoulder. I asked, “Would you like a yellow cake or a chocolate one?” “Chocolate,” he whispered back. “Ok. I’ll make you a chocolate cake with chocolate icing.”

I can’t count how many stitches are in his lip. They used blonde thread, but his lip was completely split through, not busted but a straight split. He clots really well though.

We finished the cake. He had the last real piece tonight. I found a little mouse later, Savannah, at the cake platter getting the last bits of it.

Saying what he thinks

- Getting the gist but not quite the meaning, “Dat’s wiwwy (really) important.”
- “Totawwy” (totally)
- When I give him new information, he likes to smack his lips or mouth with an “Oh” right on the end of his smack.
- When he’s upset at being scolded, “I not go’ be yo’ friend AGAIN.
- Teasing me, when he was still in pull-ups, “I go’ poop in my diaper - all day.”
- When he was still in pull-ups and I bought a new box, he immediately wanted the pull ups out of the new box, but I always told him he first had to use the loose ones left in the cabinet. So he tells me he’s going to poop and tinkle in all the diapers in the new box “but first I have to poop and tinkle in all ‘de udder diapers in ‘de cabinet. Hmph, hmph.”
- When something seems undesirable to him or he’s not interested, like if I ask, “Do you want any more of your lunch?” He replies, “No, too sweaty.”

Success is soon

We think Seth has rounded a corner in potty training. About 3 weeks ago I decided to just do away with the pull-ups and went only to his little cotton briefs. For a couple of those weeks he didn’t care that he was wet. Then I informed him a few times that it’s disgusting to get tinkle all over himself. About a week ago he began to occasionally go on his own. That’s picked up a little. It is a relief to see the end in sight. I always knew he’d eventually train. Few college students leave the house still in diapers. But seeing him grow up in this way feels like a hurtle for us both.
