Caves and Caverns by Gail Gibbons;
Little Panda by Joanne Ryder;
Bears by Kevin J. Homes;
The Biggest Bear by Lynd Ward;
Airplane by Caroline Bingham and Cheryl Telfer;
Flying Machine by Andrew Nahum
The Airplane by Nancy Robinson Masters
The cave and bear books were my idea because her first grade class has been talking a lot about bears and camping. One day at school was dedicated to a pretend campfire with smores and stories. The curiosity about airplanes was hers.
Savannah is enjoying our new bongo game. She is currently making noises into the speaker to make fish appear on the freestyle mode. Even blowing on the speaker works. The only thing I didn't approve of was screaming, which does work by the way.
You are supposed to tap the bongos and clap your hands when the game gives the proper signal. Some people cheat, you know who you are, by barely touching the bongo and tapping on the side to make the hand clapping noise. Children are so good at thinking out of the box. I saw Savannah tapping with her elbows and clapping her hands together. Since some of the Donkey Konga games are really fast, that's a really good improvisation.
They're not allowed to scream, indoors or out. I do let them make more noise when they're outside, but I go to the door sometimes to remind them that they're not allowed to scream. We have neighbors. But a couple of days ago, I heard Savannah calling out quite loudly, "Wait! Time out, Seth! Time out!" That made me laugh.
Our congregation has started its winter classes up again on Thursday nights. We've decided to go this year. Too much isolation makes Georgia a grouchy Mum, and the kiddies love being out after dark, seeing their friends, and learning their Bible stories; winning little prizes doesn't hurt :)
First grade has now been going for 2 weeks. Savannah enjoys seeing her friends, checking over the lunch I packed her.... In the evenings she has been tired, a little weepy, and quite hungry. We talked about her week as I looked through her homework and laid it on the table. Assuming she knew that I meant her homework I asked, "What part was your favorite?" She answered, Bible study.
This summer she started a library out of our house, believing that people would come here and check out the library books she'd written. I told her that strangers would not be coming in our house like that. In August she got out some of the fabric I'd given her and cut out scarves. She tied about 10 of them to the dining room chairs. Then she wrote out advertisements. (She called them newspapers.) We handed them out to our neighbors and friends. We gave one scarf to a friend; our neighbor bought two, and I bought two. She gave the rest to friends at school and her kindergarten teacher (from last year.)
I told people (jokingly) that Savannah has a new store every month. So before the scarves were gone she said she had to get rid of them all by September because she was going to open a jewelry shop. Can you guess what she's been working on? She has made 4 bracelets and 2 necklaces, using a bead kit someone gave her for her birthday. Sometimes she uses patterns with the beads; sometimes it's random.
She wrote her "advertisements" out this evening. (She no longer calls them newspapers.) She handed some out to two of my girlfriends, and will probably hand out more at school tomorrow.
She really knows what she's doing. She is figuring it out as she goes, learning from each store she opens. It was her idea to hand out the the "newspapers." She seemed to know from the beginning that she had to build up her stock, the books, the scarves, and now the jewelry. I explained to her yesterday how a business is opened. Money is either saved or borrowed from the bank, supplies and stock are bought, a building is rented, a sign is bought. (Then I explained that there are businesses that make signs.)
She already knows what her October business will be. But that's a surprise. You'll have to come back to see how that goes!
