Our Saturday

First grade is just about to start, so we went, just Mama and Savannah, to a nice Starbucks and enjoyed something sweet together. We shopped for a new skirt and two shirts. She is set for school clothes since so much fits from last spring. We met two dogs, a Boxer and a Wippit. Both friendly enough to pet. We got to hold hands since I was not pushing the stroller.

Refrigerator

She still has a few baby words. Today she said, "Rigifrator."

Savannah's library

Savannah's library
Originally uploaded by Georgia.
One day in early summer, Savannah wanted to write a little book. I folded a piece of printer paper twice. She drew a title picture on the front, two pages in the middle and the end of the story on the back.

She made about 8 of these 4 page books, putting up signs around the house for a children's section and an adult's section.

Then she put this sign on the front door and waited. She really did expect people to come to our house to get books from her library. I think the motivation for this sentence, "Library books are free." was her learning about money. Everything at the bookstore costs money. She hears the word "no" at the bookstore a lot more than she hears the word "no" at the library because library books don't cost anything.

The sign is no longer on the door, and the books she wrote have been stored in her milestone pile of writings and artworks which has grown a lot in the last 6 years. I try to be discerning in what I keep, especially since I have 2 more piles to make for brother and sister. But this I had to keep.

My big 6 year old

Savannah is already a six year old in my mind. A friend mentioned something about a 5 year old they knew the other day, and that sounded young to me. I have a six year old now, right? We are planning her Dora the Explorer party for August 13th. We talk about her starting 1st grade August 29th. Savannah likes to keep up with the count down. She will be a Brownie/Girl Scout, just as I was at that age, and she asked while watching a commercial today to go to Kohl's because they have all the girl's school fashions. I agreed that might be a good idea and we would look through her clothes in a couple of weeks to see what still fits. That will help us decide what she needs to start school. I am looking forward to ordering her brownie uniform. I remember really liking all the patches and pins. I still have mine.

A good idea

The kids are keeping cool between the kiddie pool, the slip 'n' slide, and the sprinkler. It all depends upon their mood. They would like to have all three every day, but I told them that uses too much water. So they hooked up the sprinkler right beside the pool. After a few minutes or playing in the sprinkler, they had enough water to splash around in the pool!

Raw vegetables

Brad and I have been teaching Savannah's Sunday school class for several weeks. For the lesson this morning, God restores Israel after Exile (through Jeremiah), the Israelites were told to build houses and plant gardens. The lesson suggested raw vegetables. I brought broccoli, baby carrots, lettuce, and sugar snap peas. I was really happy to see most of them liking the sugar snap peas. I cut into the pod and let the children split them open to get the peas out. One girl really enjoyed the vegetables. Savannah did well too. I get the sense that she really wanted to please me. It went over my head at the time because I was dealing with six children. It's really sweet that she wants to make me happy. I have said numerous times when she and Seth eat a good supper, that it made me so happy. This morning I stressed to the children that if they eat this way at home, they will make their mothers so happy.
