Her solution

Savannah complains of different pains, usually at the end of the day, usually in one of her calves. Once she said her head hurt, her stomach; sometimes it's just a mosquito bite that itches. My solution is the "cold, wet rag." Children have so many aches and pains, it's hard to know what's real, what's mild, and what actually needs Tylenol. The cold, wet rag makes her happy, gives her a solution. It's part of our routine. She automatically gets one now upon being tucked in.

A couple of weeks ago, the subject of having a baby came up. I don't remember how the conversation got started or progressed. It is not something i would've initiated, but I wound up saying something like, "Yeah, having a baby is painful." (Tuning it down of course.) She showed some concern, furrowing her brow, "Really?" "Yeah, it hurts some." "Well, I guess I could just use a cold, wet rag."

Graduation celebration

Savannah asked for a haircut a couple of weeks ago, so on her last day of kindergarten, as her rite of passage, we went for a haircut. She showed the stylist where she wanted it cut, right above her shoulders. She was very happy with it and looks a lot older to both me and Brad. It's allowed us to see a lot better what she'll look like ten years from now.

We also went to Safeway so they could pick out 10 pieces of candy each from the Brach's candy aisle. We did that at Valentine's day also. The candy trips were not too close together. and it still felt special.

Savannah's summer

Savannah will only be home for one week before she starts a summer class. The school district is offering (free this year) an arts and drama class. Every morning she'll work on different art media and practice a play that they'll perform at the end of the 4 week class. She'll have one free month after that before starting all day first grade.

We have a short amount of time to fit in a lot of fun.

What we're reading now

The July issue of Highlights is here! She takes it to bed with her during her reading time, along with a pen, to work the puzzles and read the stories.

Two days in the countdown

Her last day of school will be Thursday the 16th. I may get her hair cut after to celebrate. She asked for something like a pageboy cut after seeing a six year old girl in Chili's with that cut. I will also take them to Safeway for 10 pieces of candy each, their selection, from the Brach's candy island. She's been asking to do that ever since Valentine's day.

Monday they had Mother Goose games and a Mother Goose nursery rhyme movie. Today they dressed as their favorite Zoophonics animal. Her choice was the cat. She dressed in an animal print skirt and a kitty cat t-shirt handed down from her cousin Kimberly. We cut out some cardboard cat ears that she colored in with marker and attached them to a headband. Then before leaving for school I added black whiskers on her cheeks and told her to meow.

Tomorrow the kinders are going to the Oakland Zoo. We took her to the Bronx Zoo when she was 2 1/2. she wouldn't remember it, and for some reason we took few pictures. I'm excited for her. Thursday is called Field Day which I think is just a big party :)

The curse

A boy in kindergarten told Savannah about "the curse." I've no clue how it started with him. Savannah's given it her own meaning. At first, she said the curse was in the backyard. She did not seem scared at all, just mysterious. She tied a string around a paper towel roll, then taped that to the wall by the back door. Beside that she taped a sign to the wall that read, "The curse can break anything." Ominous but amusing. Every now and then she went to the door to look for the curse through her telescope.

One of the moms at worship service said Savannah gave her son a note that read, "We need to find more clues." Her son told her about the curse, saying he didn't know what the curse was but it only came out at night.

I finally asked her what the curse was, and she said she thought it was an alien, which she probably filled in from watching Lilo and Stitch. She told Daddy the other day it was a bird.
