Gettin' into stuff

Savannah does not like for Seth to get into her toys. That's probably why it's such a cute thrill to see him happily pilfering her doctor's kit right behind her back while she's watching Calliou : )

Planting together

Savannah loves the plant nursery. We went yesterday, and she was talking about all that she wanted to "borrow" (buy).

Thanks to my friend's birthday gift certificate, we came home and planted basil, rosemary and zucchinni squash. The sweet pea is waiting on the deck for me to find a place for them. We have some left on the certificate, but the store was closing. So we're going back today for sage. I smell sage (for chicken and dressing) and always remember Thanksgiving in the South.

Honestly

I've heard that children embarrass their parents. In a store yesterday, I heard Savannah say, "You have big teeth."

She had said it to the sales girl. I told her that we don't tell people things like that. On our way back out, the sales girl smiled. Savannah's assessment had been correct.

Brad had been walking behind her when she said it. He said the sales girl laughed about it, which is somewhat comforting. But what are you gonna do?

Sleep brings sleeps.

It was last July that Savannah started having trouble sleeping. Waking up just before dawn, she'd come to find me. I was 7 months pregnant, and it was hard to go back to sleep. Then the bedtime troubles started after Seth was born.

I finally bought a copy of Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems. After I felt I had the information I needed, I took a couple of days to psych myself up. Two nights ago, I told her, very nicely but sure of myself, that bedtime was going to change. I started with, "Mama and Daddy are not going to lie down with you anymore."

After a few seconds for that to sink in I said, "But, instead of 1 book at bedtime, you get 3. And then we can play a quiet game like cards or a puppet show." This excited her.

I then explained the calendar we were to put on her door. For going to sleep by herself (of course this would include Minnie Mouse and Bunny), she would get one sticker. For staying in her bed all night, she would get another sticker. After four stickers, that's two nights of complete success, she would get a "little present."

Two nights have passed, and she received her first little present, some new paints. She painted me a pretty picture today. The first night she cried for 1 minute. Then I heard nothing. No running up and down the hall crying for 2 hours like she did last fall. No running to and from the potty for an hour and a half. Just one minute.

Last night I think I heard whimpering and talking. But nothing loud. She definitely tried to get another story out of me and asked that I lie down with her. But she's growing up. A few months makes a big difference.

She's also more restful during her sleep. Last night she was in the same position when I went to bed at midnight and still covered up! A friend of mine told me that sleep brings sleep. (You know, the wise get wiser. The rich get richer.) Even adults have trouble sleeping when they're overtired.

Who knows, she may soon ask for Daddy to read and play with her before bed.

Soy Capitan!

When Savannah set up a play area of tinker toys and toilet paper in my bathroom doorway, I was sure to tell her to pick up before she left it. The second time I told her this before I went downstairs with Seth, she said, "Aye, aye, Mudder."

Soul Mate

Shooting stars
in the flight path of God's destinations
journey these New England roads.

Pass the greenest leaf.
Let the billions of leaves amaze me,
that God knows them all,
that God will open your eyes to one.

Night's green darkness hides that one from the moonlight
`til in His daybreak's own good time,
chartreuse in the sun's dance,
comes blazing up,
sure
and right.

Our first kite

We made our first kite today. It was Savannah's idea, and we share the signature of our creation on the back, which I'm proud to do.

Green construction paper cut into a diamond, jute for the frame and three foot tail. We ran with it. I got it up some, enough to feel I can call it a real kite. Savannah at 3 feet or so herself, ran with it a few inches off the ground, but I still said, "Yeeeaaaaah." Then we made a chess cake.

The ice cream truck

Our second trip of the season to the park turned me pink again. The children were lathered in sunscreen. Seth had a cute little rocket ship cap.

Savannah fell, scraping and bruising her cheek. It was sad. Her whole cheek turned bright pink. But after our picnic in the shade, she had her first ice cream from an ice cream truck. I haven't even done that.

There's an episode of Oswald where Oswald and Weenie Girl follow the sound of the ice cream truck, driven by a snowman, all over Big City. They finally track it down after running into all their friends who give them bad directions. Oswald gets a swizzle berry cone and Weenie Girl a vanilla bone.

The scrape is still on her cheek, so I'm putting off getting video of her awesome rendition of "I got the jay, jay down in my heart." A day or two more.

A trip to the mall almost always means

1. Ice cream
2. Savannah falls asleep in the van before we get home
3. I actually get some exercise
4. Shopping, which I get a pleasure from that promptly makes me feel a little guilty which I counter with the fact that I shop clearance
5. Brad and I get to listen to Beck

Question

Does anyone else out there rate their day on a scale of how many times they gritted their teeth?
