Learning the routine

Tonight, BEFORE I blew kisses to Seth (and later Savannah), Arwen smacked her lips. She heard me say, "Night, night."

And for about a week she has been smacking her hand to blow kisses.

Entertaining herself

Last night while Arwen sat in my lap, she burped, then she chuckled.

Mimicing

Arwen mimics lots of little things. She smacks her lips when we blow a kiss, no matter who the kiss is for. There she just did it with her back to me! She waves now. And she says Ma ma ma ma ma when she's around me and "Da da da da da da" when she's around Brad. And of course , laughter.

Baby skin

When Arwen finds herself undressed, she rubs her hand in big circles across her chest and belly.

Tender hearted

A few days ago, I saw Arwen quietly dropping one Cheerio at a time off the edge of her high chair. I sweep all the time and even though it's a little milestone for them to learn gravity, I'm not excited about cleaning up deliberate messes. So I made eye contact and said something like no, no Arwen and shook my finger at her. Ok, compared to the sternness I use with Savannah and Seth, this was nothing. Nevertheless, the scolding she recognized. She's heard it used with her siblings. Her brow turned cross, she puckered up her little mouth and cried; two big tears popped out of her eyes. It was really sweet. I haven't seen her do it again, yet.

First game

About a week ago, Arwen dropped her Zwieback toast onto her high chair tray. When she did, I laughed at it which made her happy. So she picked it up and dropped it again. I laughed again. Then she laughed. She picked it up, and dropped it again, and again and again and again. Each time, we both laughed. She had made up her first game!

Update

Sometimes Arwen sleeps with her eyes just slightly open.

It appears she's getting the same gap between her top teeth that Savannah and Seth got from me.

Her laugh for when she's amused is very staccato, like little laughter bullets. When she's really happy, she just opens her mouth wide, squints up her eyes and gives a squeal.

She has one squeal, sometimes a scream that cuts right through me. One day recently Arwen pulled up to the couch cushion where Brad and I were sitting. She screamed her rough little scream and made me nearly climb the wall. When I jumped, Brad asked what was wrong. I said, "Didn't that bother you." He hadn't really noticed her scream much. It's as if the pitch of her scream is finely tuned to pierce through her mother's ear drum, saying, "Tend to me, now!" I have a friend whose two year old, the last baby of five, has always been loud and screams to defend her toys. Arwen definitely competes for attention being the last of three. When I heard my friend's little girl scream, for some reason I thought it was cute. ???

She fusses at almost every meal. I see her watching her family eat. She wants to take control. But with only four teeth, she can't eat like we do yet. I give her a few finger foods that are easily chewed, but a lot of her meals still come from baby food. So we fuss at each other through our meals together. She doesn't seem to know how to reject the baby food, she just opens her mouth out of habit or instinct, then makes a face and fusses.
