Through the night

Her fourth tooth is inching its way down. She doesn't seem to mind. She slept through the night twice in the last several days. It's such a milestone for most parents. I've been asked many times, "How does he/she sleep for you?" I read the articles and literature on the subject when Savannah was tiny. They really got my hopes up. But nobody said how much they would still wake up at night, even Savannah at 5. Once you know you're in it for the long haul with your third one, waking up at night is not so overwhelming. Yet when I wake up and I have slept through the night, I feel something close to joy.

Puttering around on her "sick day"

After a little baby fever last night, Arwen has cut her third tooth. Doctors deny there's any relationship there. But mothers say the opposite.

She has been crawling around the living room floor while Savannah and Seth watch The Fox and the Hound. Digging into our popcorn, pulling magazines and subscription cards out of the cubbies of our IKEA coffee table, pushing the big bright ligh on the XBox to eject their movie and suffering through the carelessness of her big tough brother, she's doing really well today.

Big milestone for me

Last night she slept through the night in her own bed. It is the same crib that both Savannah and Seth used. One day, I'll take the front off and use it as a settee. So when people come over, they'll see that it's really a crib and ask if my children used it.

She has slept in her crib before, and she has slept through the night only in our bed. Last night was the first night for both together, 10:30 - 5:30. It made me happy. I still bring her in here in the mornings though, just like with the other two. It's a nice time.

Self aware

Arwen takes careful notice of the children around her. We go to Safeway and Costco, and she eyeballs everybody, especially children. Not just babies, but she watches the 2's and 5's.

She tries to strike up little babble conversations with others, using more tongue motions, a jabber of vowels and consonants.

As open as she is, today a woman spoke affectionately to her long enough that she shyly dropped her head against me as if becoming self conscious and wanting to hide.

Moving and eating

She pulls up to her feet quite a lot. She crawls military style all over and can go fast enough that I blink and she's behind a chair or coffee table out of sight.

When she's hungry, and I pour Cheerios out in front of her, she grabs a fist and stuffs them in, not quite the fist of Cheerios that Seth could pick up when he was a baby, but she's still young.

The pasty pureed chicken makes her gag, but she likes squash and plums and bananas. We had to take a break from the bananas though if you know what I mean.

Sharing a laugh

A week ago she had pulled herself up to the coffee table. I sat behind her. She had her face turned toward me. She gave two baby sneezes and looked at me and laughed. Nothing else had happened to make her laugh except the sneezes. By sneezing, she thought she'd made a funny.
